Best Bathroom Fan in 2026: Panasonic vs Broan Vs Amazon

Choosing the right bath fan is one of those unglamorous decisions that can either seem to make a bathroom loud with rattling and no difference or is unnoticeable as it does the perfect job getting rid of humidity and smells. At the end of the day, it is an easy decision for me, I haven’t found anything better than Panasonic.
When it comes to bathroom ventilation, the architects or general contractors usually land on two heavyweights: Panasonic and Broan-NuTone. There are newer entries that are pushed on Amazon that include Homewerks.
Selecting a bathroom fan is as important as selecting the waterproofing system for a bathroom because it ensures fresh air and minimizes mold.
Selecting a Bathroom Fan:
When selecting bathroom ventilation, I’m looking for the following:
- Quiet at required CFM: A fan can be quiet at lower CFM but I like to size a fan with more than enough CFM for the space. The more over the required CFM, the better the fan is at removing humidity and smells.
- Simple and reliable: I don’t want all of the bells and whistles in a fan. I plan bathrooms with proper lighting and so I’m not looking for an odd light that attracts attention to the fan. There has been an increase in bluetooth LED discos or speakers but to me, I’d rather get a fan that lasts for decades instead of one where the bluetooth features die after a few years or the app gets abandoned. There are also better ways to add music or lighting to a bathroom.
My Experience:
Panasonic Whisper Series
- Panasonic (WhisperCeiling/WhisperFit) is the gold standard for silence. Many of their units operate at less than 0.3 sones. This means that you can’t hear them running.
- Panasonic uses motors with Pick-A-Flow, which allows you to select the CFM with a slide of the switch. This means that you can set the speed to slightly higher than required for your space and see if the noise is acceptable and tune it down to your liking. (Hint: they’re quiet no matter at what setting, I have mine set at the highest setting)
- Panasonic has Plug 'N Play modules that allow you to add features like motion sensors or condensation sensors after installation. These can add to the versatility of the fan but I don’t use any.
Broan-NuTone Bathroom Fans
- Broan-NuTone fans have a history of being notoriously loud, though they have a few lines that can be quiet. With my experience, they are not nearly as quiet as Panasonic though no matter the marketing.
- Where they shine is in being a great option for those looking for something on a budget.
- Broan-NuTone is leaning hard into adding gimmicky features in hopes to convince people over to their fans. Their ChromaComfort line offers app-controlled color-changing LEDs, and their SurfaceShield technology uses vital violet light to prevent mold and bacteria growth. For me, keeping the fan simple is essential to not having issues or having to replace the fan.
Homewerks
- Homewerks or those found under Home Depot or Lowes branding are looking to compete with Broan-NuTone for the economy bathroom fan market.
- Many of the product designs are simple and elegant. I tried using one but had to return because it was dead on arrival.
Ducting
Performance of a bathroom fan is not limited to the selected fan. They lose efficiency when pushed through long duct runs so making sure that the duct runs are smartly run is essential. Sizing up the ducts to 6” instead of the typical 4” is essential for having great static flow through the ducting.
Switching
Even though some bathroom fans come with humidity sensors, I recommend putting a bathroom fan on a timer. This ensures that you can walk out of the room and have it run for a little bit longer to evacuate humidity and smells without any problems.
Minimizing Ugly Fan Covers
To take a bathroom to the next level, I like to use a Fittes Lite vent cover. The lite version of Fittes is affordable and does a good job making the vent feel crisp and minimal, just make sure not to deform the square when installing. It can feel a little pricey but it adds a luxury, clean aesthetic to any bathroom.
Recommendation
A majority of the time, unless it is a tiny bathroom, I am selecting a Panasonic WhisperCeiling FV-1115VQ1. The CFM selection with Smartflow ranges from 110 to 150 CFM. This provides better overhead than the base model and usually can be found at around the same price as the base 50 to 110 CFM.
