Set in the beautiful landscape near Crested Butte, Colorado, this experiment in Net Zero building challenges the conventional notions of how a house can adapt and passively generate the necessities for living, leaving merely a small footprint. This project was meticulously engineered to respond to the demands of the natural environment. The goal of the house was to prove that energy independence and aesthetic sophistication can coexist beautifully.

The Power of Passive and Active Design

The home’s core design philosophy is rooted in a deep understanding of how to leverage its surroundings. The most striking feature is a prominent greenhouse, which serves as the primary thermal engine. This isn't merely a static space for cultivation; it's a critical component of the passive solar strategy.

Sunlight streams in, warming the thermal mass of the interior, the concrete floors and thick walls. When the sun disappears and it gets cold outside, the thermal mass slowly radiates heat back into the living spaces, significantly reducing the need for mechanical heating. During the summer, the greenhouse is opened up, so that no heat is captured.

Complementing this system, the strategic placement of windows facilitates natural cross-ventilation, a simple yet powerful technique that allows for passive cooling during warmer months. This thoughtful design element, combined with the home’s exceptional high R-value insulation, creates a comfortable and stable interior climate that is remarkably resilient to Crested Butte’s dramatic temperature swings.

Engineered for Energy Independence

The home’s ambition for near-total independence from the grid is supported by a robust solar power system. High-efficiency photovoltaic panels are angled to maximize solar gain, with the generated electricity stored in an on-site battery bank. This ensures a consistent power supply, providing a level of energy security that is highly valuable in such a remote location. Every electrical choice, from low-draw LED lighting to energy-efficient appliances, was made with a single purpose: to minimize the home’s energy footprint.

While the solar provides a pivotal role in the home’s , a clean-burning pellet heater provides a reliable backup on the darkest, coldest days.
