How Reddit Can Help in Building a Custom Home

Most people follow a predictable path: they ask a realtor for a name, scroll through pages of Google, or get lost in the sea of mediocre posts on Houzz. The knowledgebase of those on Reddit can be very beneficial while going through the daunting task of building a home.
If you are planning on building in Colorado, here are some tips to find valuable information:
Local Subreddits
Local subs like r/Denver, r/Boulder, and r/FortCollins are a good place to start your search. Use the particular threads to compile a list of those recommended. It is important to do due diligence, make sure to research the particular company or person recommended since people are now taking advantage of Reddit’s anonymous posting to inject their name.
Expert Subreddits
If you have technical questions, visit subreddits that are where the experts hang out. Some subreddits that I frequent:
- r/Homebuilding: This is the ultimate subreddit for seeing custom homes being built and it is full of questions from people deep in the process. Search to find advice on getting started to general advice on construction. This sub’s blind spot is that it leans more towards developer-type construction for McMansions, Farmhouses, or Barndominiums. My personal opinion leans more towards quality construction and exceeding some building code requirements.
- r/CenturyHomes: This subreddit is named after homes that are over 100 years old but in reality, it is the best sub for renovating any home. The renovation advice focuses on quality over quick fixes. Century Homes does lean a little towards having homes maintain a historic-style that sometimes can be a little pastiche.
Reddit shouldn't be your only source, but it’s the best place to quickly build general knowledge. It helps you move past the marketing fluff and figure out what is the general consensus.
